The cardinal principles to be followed while developing and maintaining storm water drains are: the side protection works, if any, proposed should not result in reducing the existing flow as they are required to cater to higher discharges due to ever increasing urbanisation and consequent reduction of land for absorption of water.

The construction of structures like culverts and bridges across the water course should not interrupt the flow either in the direction or quantity.

The practice of polluting surrounding goes unabated. The measures being taken under the JNNURM with substantial spending may provide temporary solution. Coupled with such steps, concerted efforts need to be made to sensitise people for environmentally sustainable actions.
