IEG in touch with BPOs to train students Programme to be offered in all the major cities HYDERABAD: After the successful launch of Special Training Programme (STP) for engineers from socially and economically backward sections, the Institute of Electronic Governance (IEG) is planning a similar programme to train graduates from these sections for employment in the BPO sector. The IEG is in touch with major BPO companies like Dell, Satyam and Genpact to equip selected students with the skills needed for absorbing them into the industry. “All the major companies have expressed their interest in this initiative and we will come up with a complete picture within a month,” the IEG CEO, Amarnath Reddy said. Unlike the STP this programme would be offered in all the major cities with at least one centre in each district to ensure that it reaches the targeted group. However, the pilot batches would start in Hyderabad. ‘Huge demand’Mr. Reddy says that unemployment and HR demand cannot co-exist. “There is a huge demand in the BPO sector and the NASSCOM’s study indicates that the IT and ITES sector will generate 28 lakh jobs in the next five years. “We want to ensure that such huge potential should be exploited and the socially and economically backward sections get a major share from it,” he said. The programme would be open for all graduates without any technical background. The idea is to pick up candidates from areas where the fruits of the IT and ITES sector have not reached so far. “We will make them employable by imparting certain skills needed for the industry including English and communication skills,” Mr. Reddy said. The training would be provided free of cost to all the selected candidates and some centres would have residential accommodation. The training would be imparted by people from the industry apart from the IEG faculty. On completion of training a job fair will be conducted to provide placement opportunities as is being done under the STP launched for engineering and MCA students. The issue of entry is yet to be decided but the IEG plans to have a test that would basically analyse the employable skills of the candidates and the duration of the programme would be two to three months.
