AIADMK, MDMK councillors walk out

Staff Reporter

In protest against proposed increase in property tax

MANAPPARAI: Protesting the proposed hike in the property tax, members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) staged a walk-out at the Manapparai Municipal Council meeting held here recently.

They said that the hike would hard hit the residents of the town, who are already overburdened with the existing property tax rates.

It all started when the Municipal Chairperson E.V.K. Saroja Kandasamy asked the Municipal officials to explain to the councillors, the guidelines issued by the Directorate of Municipal Administration for hiking the property tax.

The AIADMK councillor P. Ramamoorthy, who intervened, said that the property tax collection was already poor in the town, indicating that the residents were unable to remit the taxes even at the existing rates. Officials pointed out that a demand for Rs.37 lakh was yet to be collected under this head.

The councillor said that any hike in property tax would further cripple the economy of the tax-payers to a great extent, urging the State Government to withdraw any upward revision in the norms for the Manapparai town.

Protesting against the hike, he walked out of the council hall. Other AIADMK members Raja. Rajeswari, S. Raman, M. Vellaiammal, R. Selvi and Ayisha Beevi besides the MDMK councillor S. Pandimeena followed suit.
