New seven deadly sins

BANGALORE: In his Good Friday message, Archbishop of Bangalore Arch Diocese Rev. Bernard Moras exhorted the devout to shun the new seven deadly sins, which the Archbishop said are having serious social implications.

The Archbishop on Wednesday said the seven sins were taking shape in the secularised west as well as in developing countries. People in these countries were according less importance to spirituality thereby making an attempt to live without God. The new sins were environment pollution, genetic manipulation, accumulating excess wealth, inflicting poverty, drug trafficking and consumption, morally debatable experiments and violation of fundamental rights. Rev. Moras said hedonism and consumerism had invaded the bosom of the church undermining the Christian faith from within. This undermined the lifestyle as well as the routine behaviour of believers. He warned that the new deadly sins along with the original seven were having a serious implication on society. Implications of original sins were already visible in society, Rev. Moras said giving the example on “greed”. Nearly 10 per cent of Bangaloreans have more than what was sufficient while the rest were becoming poorer and poorer. “With Good Friday approaching, let us remember the sacrifice by Lord Jesus Christ and work towards serving the poor. We shall, during the holy communion, pray for smooth conduct of elections in Karnataka,” Rev. Moras said.
