Lawyers boycott courts in district

Another boycott planned on Saturday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association has urged the government not to give its concurrence to the appointment of new judges in the High Court till the establishment of a bench of the Court in the capital city.

A press note issued here said it is understood that a five-judge collegium is about to submit a list of nine persons to be appointed as judges in the High Court.

On the 34th day of the agitation organised by the Bar Association for the establishment of a court bench here, lawyers and advocates clerks boycotted all courts in the district.

Protest march

The agitating lawyers took out a protest march through the verandahs of the court building in the city. A similar boycott would be organised on March 22.

The action council has been expanded by including representatives of the Bar Associations of Neyyattinkara, Kattakkada, Nedumangad, Attingal and Varkala, the press note said. A public meeting would be held at the Varkala ‘maidan’ on March 22.

In his inaugural address at the public meting held as part of the agitation on Wednesday leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy said he would support any action taken by the government for the establishment of a High Court bench in the city.

In his address at a meeting convened by the Bar Association on Wednesday afternoon, PDP leader Abdul Nasir Maudany said the bench can be established in a matter of hours if the government really puts its mind to it, the press note added.
