Capital is fast emerging as a medical tourism centre, says Sheila Dikshit

‘Emergency care blueprint has been prepared to deal with accidents on highway’

‘Two more trauma care centres to be set up at Lady Hardinge and Safdarjung Hospital’

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated the Capital’s third trauma care centre at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital here on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dikshit said: “While the Delhi Government is committed to ensuring that medical facilities are made available to all, augmenting the emergency trauma care available is critical as we have not been able to keep up with the demand. The demand far exceeds the supply as of now. Delhi is fast emerging as a medical tourism centre and we need to ensure that world-class facilities are available here.”

Also present on the occasion were Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi, and the Medical Superintendent of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Dr. N. K. Chaturvedi.

Reiterating the Health Ministry’s commitment to introducing a common toll-free ambulance number for the entire country and improving the ambulance services across India, Dr. Ramadoss said an emergency care blueprint had been prepared to deal with accidents on highway. For the Capital, he announced the setting up of two more trauma care centres at Lady Hardinge and Safdarjung Hospital.

National programme

“We will soon be launching a national programme on emergency and trauma care that will be introduced in a phased manner. Also, ambulances that are now being used mainly to transport patients will be equipped to give patients medical support till they are admitted to a medical care centre. There is an urgent need for more trauma care centres and we are committed to providing adequate trained manpower to ensure proper running of the programme,” said Dr. Ramadoss.
