Innovating on reality shows

A few years ago, a 100-channel facility for a television channel was considered an unnecessary feature. But the arrival of scores of channels has made it a welcome facet. Along with it came the competition among the channels. Innovation has become the hallmark of channels that gain more popularity.

New themes and modes of presentation are being experimented on the air for attracting viewers. The process, gave way to new trends like reality shows overtaking the serials on several channels.

One of the novel programmes aired by Discovery Travel & Living focuses on hairdressing. Titled ‘Shear Genius,’ the programme puts together a group of talented hairstylists who literally go head-to-head in creating hairdressing challenges. Hair becomes an art form as the contestants with a flair for hair compete in challenges that could put them one step closer to being crowned ‘Shear Genius.’

To win the competition, the hairstylist will have to indulge in creative tasks that require more than just talent with comb and scissors. Whether it is the bob, twist or perm, hair becomes a new form of art. Glamour queen Vanessa Williams and cine star Jaclyn Smith are among the judges.

In another innovative session, the channel airs a programme named ‘Making it big.’ It offers young professionals a ticket to the top of popular creative careers. In each episode, three hopefuls face the tough challenge to vie for a reward that money can’t buy – mentoring by a high profile leader in their industry. From music video directors to fashion photographers, from pastry chefs to songwriters, ‘Making it big’ features the careers that everyone dreams about living.
