It is a problem that has eluded a solution despite the efforts of planners, scientists, engineers and various departments. The heavy showers over the last two days have led to water-logging in the Pazhavangady area, reducing traffic to a crawl, and bringing commercial activity to a standstill. The flooding makes a mockery of the reconstruction of the culvert across the Am ayizhanjan canal. Traders and residents in the area are on the warpath against what they term an ‘unscientific’ flood control project that has served no purpose other than wasting public money. According to officials, the blockage of a cross drain running parallel to the bus terminal is responsible for the water-logging. The drain constructed during the Travancore era was designed to carry excess water from the Amayizhanjan canal to the Thekkanamkara. But over the years, it was blocked by encroachments. Restoring the canal requires removal of the encroachments. And there lies the crux of the problem. T. Nanda Kumar
