The contest will be held from March 21

Teams from across the world will take part in it

Bangalore: The National Law School of India University is ready to launch the first NLS International Arbitration Moot Court Competition from March 21 to March 23.

Teams from across the world will participate in competitions (mock courts, practising important legal skills of writing, speaking and argumentation).

The subject of the competition is “Bilateral Investment Treaty Arbitration”, an upcoming area.

Arbitration is now the pre-eminent method of dispute resolution for business worldwide, and is growing rapidly in India.

The NLS International Arbitration Moot Court Competition aims to sharpen the skills of future practitioners in the field, bring arbitration law into the mainstream and to provide a platform for students from India and abroad to display their skills.

Bilateral treaties

Bilateral investment treaties are an increasingly important area of interaction between developed and developing countries. In the global economy, the protection of foreign investment is a necessary precondition for trade and growth.

Disputes arising over these treaties have raised critical issues which must be resolved.

The NLS International Arbitration Moot deals with this promising area of law and business.

The competition is organised by a core team of experienced faculty members as well as students who have performed exceptionally well at leading mational and international moot courts.

Teams

NLS’s flagship moot court competition has elicited great interest in its very first year, with the participation of 32 teams from India and abroad, including those of the University of Warwick at London, UMS Lahore and University of Colombo.

Judges

The finals will be judged by leading arbitration law experts and judges, including G.S. Singhvi of the Supreme Court of India, K.S. Ahluwahlia of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and V. Gopala Gowda of the Karnataka High Court.

They will be joined by senior advocates and leading law practitioners such as Sidharth Luthara, A. Jayagovind, V. Vijaykumar and 21 distinguished alumni of NLS now holding positions of responsibility in leading law firms across the world.

The closing ceremony will be graced by Mr. Singhvi who will be the chief guest and Cyriac Joseph, Chief Justice, Karnataka High Court, who will be the guest of honour.
