Legal aid promised to HIV/AIDS patients
Staff Reporter
NAMAKKAL: Concerted efforts are being taken up to extend necessary legal assistance to persons living with HIV/AIDS, said Madras High Court judge Justice M. Jaichandran. Participating in the legal services and AIDS awareness programme organised by the Namakkal District Legal Services Authority here recently, the judge called for efforts to put an end to discrimination against persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA).
People should extend care and compassion to improve the physical and social well-being of PLHAs. Pointing to high prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the districts of Theni, Karur and Salem, the judge stressed the need for raising the level of awareness among rural people about the disease.
Mr. Jaichandran regretted that even students were found infected with HIV and said that the awareness level should be increased among all sections of society.
He distributed financial assistance to 47 PLHAs.
Collector G. Sundaramurthi said that the district administration has appointed counsellors at all the primary health centres to create awareness and motivate people to seek voluntary testing services.
Over 560 PLHAs were being given monthly financial assistance. An interaction with college students was organised as a part of the programme. Principal District Judge A. Rathinavelu and Superintendent of Police John Nicholson spoke.
