Women given exemption from night shift
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: As many as 30,000 women in 155 companies in the field of Information Technology (IT), IT- enabled services (ITES) and Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) have been granted exemption to work on night shifts under the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act 1963, Deputy Labour Commissioner G. Manjunath said on Wednesday.
He was speaking at an interactive seminar on “Women working during night shift in IT/ITES/BPO sectors,” organised by the Karnataka chapter of the National Institute of Personnel Management.
It is mandatory for these companies to seek exemption from the otherwise blanket ban on women and young persons working during night imposed under Section 25 of the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1963.
When asked about whether all the IT/ITES/BPO companies have sought exemption from the ban, Mr. Manjunath said, “There are more than 1,500 such companies but not all of them have sought as only those companies that have women working on night shift need to register.”
On the facilities available to women under the Act, he said that women working at night are eligible for crèche facilities for their children, that they must be put on 15-day rotation basis and provided adequate security.
