Devanahalli airport is 24 km from Chickballapur Land prices have skyrocketed in the region CHICKBALLAPUR: The district administration is contemplating bringing Chickballapur under the Comprehensive Development Plan. Achieving planned development of the growing town, and of course to some extent checking the activities of land mafia are said to be the main objectives of the administration. Apart from attaining district headquarters status six months ago, the city’s proximity to the Devanahalli international airport has reportedly prompted the administration to take the steps. Areas under eight to 10 km radius around the city would be brought under the plan, Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav told The Hindu on Thursday. The need for extending the jurisdiction of city limits rose since the new international airport at Devanahalli is only 24 km away from Chickballapur. Even as the district administration launched an eviction drive to clear the encroachments in the town as elsewhere in the district, the airport factor has expedited the need for planned development of the city. It has been planned to conduct a satellite-based survey for formulating the project and objections and suggestions will be elicited before implementing it, Mr. Yadav said. The authorities have decided not to disturb any existing industries and other commercial or residential structures. Norms formulated would be applicable only for the new ventures in the future, the Deputy Commissioner clarified. Infrastructure facilities such as roads and water would be provided to all the areas falling under the project. Controlling the activities of land mafia is one among the objectives of the move. Realising the importance of the region in the wake of construction of the international airport, land sharks have reportedly eyed on the land in and around Chickballapur. This has resulted in skyrocketting of value of land in the region. The authorities are receiving hundreds of applications for land conversion. Under the existing law, they are duty-bound to approve genuine applications within four months’ time. In the absence of CDP, the administration will be compelled to sanction the conversion of land from agricultural to non-agricultural purpose. Feeling the heat, the administration has reportedly taken up the move to extend city limit jurisdiction up to 10 km. BoundariesUnder the proposed project, Chickballapur limits will be extended up to Beediganahalli in the south and Reddygollavarahalli in the north. Patrenahalli and Bandemmanahalli will be the boundaries in eastern and western directions respectively.
