Court sets up panel to resolve idol row
Staff Reporter
Bangalore: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday directed two groups of devotees of the Lakshmi Janardhana Swamy Temple in Hassan to sit together and sort out differences over the installation of a new idol in the temple.
Justice A.S. Bopanna asked both the groups to nominate one member each to a committee and he suggested that the Endowment Commissioner could be the third member of the committee.
The committee, he said, could go into the dispute between the devotees on the installation of an idol of Andal in the temple and make recommendations to the Government.
Justice Bopanna passed the order when he was hearing a petition by the Vedantha Deshka Trust of Bangalore and another petitioner, K.R. Mukndan, also from Bangalore.
The petitioners said the Lakshmi Vigraha (idol) at Bylahalli, Salagama hobli in Hassan district, is the Kuladevathe (family Goddess) of scores of villagers of Bylahalli and adjoining villages.
They said the temple is an ancient one and that the Shreevaishnava saint Ramanujacharya visited it.
