Rise in demand leads to power shortage of 9.5 p.c.: Shinde

NEW DELHI: Union Minister for Power Sushil Kumar Shinde on Thursday said the continued rise in demand for energy had led to a situation where the country was faced with an overall energy shortage of 9.5 per cent and peak demand shortage of 15.8 per cent.

Stating that the country expected the power sector to provide uninterrupted power to ensure that the economic growth does not get derailed, Mr. Shinde said it was the responsibility of State and Union governments to work in coordination and help in improving the performance in the power sector.

The Power Minister was speaking at the annual national awards presentation function to power utilities for meritorious performance during 2006-07 organised in the capital.

The other important dignitaries present during the function included B. K. Chaturvedi, Member (Power), Planning Commission, Anil Razdan, Secretary (Power) and Rakesh Nath, Chairman, Central Electricity Authority.

Prominent among those who received the award at the function included the National Thermal Power Corporation, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited Tata Power, Reliance Energy and AP Genco.
