TIRUVARUR: A sum of Rs. 325 crore has been allotted by the Tamil Nadu Government for improving infrastructure of rural schools to help students, said S. Rajarathinam, Special Secretary to Chief Minister, at Nedumbalam near Thiruthuraipoondi near here recently. He laid the foundation stone for the silver jubilee celebrations and additional school building for the Government High school at Nedumbalam. He said that 1,880 computer teachers have been appointed. In the current year, 31,000 new teachers have been appointed in the State. He said that Government was giving importance to education and free bus passes were given to students from first standard to tenth standard. Free cycles were given to backward class students of eleventh and twelth standards. Mr. Rajarathinam said that the school was an elementary school 50 years back when he studied there. It has now become a High school and celebrated its silver jubilee. It is heartening to note that there are 900 students in this school. He said that construction of school building at a cost of Rs. 12 lakh is going on under Namakku Naame scheme at the school. Out of Rs. 12 lakh, parents and teachers have to bear Rs. 4 lakh while the remaining amount of Rs. 8 lakh will be borne by Government. Mr. Rajarathinam gave a cheque for Rs. 30,000 as part of people’s contribution of Rs. 4 lakh at the function. He unveiled the portrait of Rao Bahadur N. R. Samiappa who gave free land for the location of the school. T. S. Kalayanasundaram, president of Parent-Teachers’ Association, unveiled the portrait of P. V. Rajamanickam, former headmaster of the school at the function. Collector M. Chandrasekaran, K. Ulaganathan, Thiruthuraipoondi MLA also spoke.
