Banks disbursed Rs. 15 crore to the women’s groups this year They are asked to ensure target achievement KARUR: Banks in the district have been given a credit disbursal target of Rs. 25 crore for funding women self-help groups during 2008-09. During the current year, the banks disbursed Rs. 15 crore to the groups under various schemes. Calling upon the banks to aid SHGs to the maximum possible level taking into account their performance and credit worthiness, Collector T.N. Venkatesh said that credit under the Swarna Jayanthi Gram Swarzogar Yojana economic activity and revolving fund scheme, TAHDCO schemes and direct loans to groups including second and third dosages of credit could be the channels to extend help to SHGs. Based on a policy note circulated by the State Government, it was stated that over a period of time if a group were to utilise credit to the tune of Rs. 15 lakh through structured schemes, then the particular SHG would be able to generate income to the expected level on its own. As per the note, banks and development wing officials working at the grassroots level have been urged to keep track of the SHGs’ progress and ensure that the target was reached. Also, Block Development Officers and non-governmental organisations have been asked to grade the groups for eligibility and pursue their efforts with the banks for getting the SHGs direct credit linkage or linkage with subsidy under SGSY and TAHDCO schemes, Mr. Venkatesh said. It is estimated that during 2008-09, SHGs could be extended credit to the tune of Rs. 25 crore. As per current plans, the Indian Overseas Bank could extend Rs. 10 crore, State Bank of India Rs. 5 crore, Indian Bank Rs. 3 crore, Bank of India Rs. 2 crore, Karur Vysya Bank, Lakshmi Vilas Bank, Vijaya Bank and Bank of Baroda Rs. 1 crore each, and the District Central Cooperative Bank a sum of Rs. 1.50 crore. Project Officer (Women’s Development) S. Ayyaru, Lead District Manager K. Chandrasekaran, block development officers and bank officials participated in the meeting. At another meeting that the Department of Women’s Development conducted, the matter was taken up and discussed extensively to help bankers and non-governmental agencies give concrete shape to the funding process and meet the aspirations of SHG women.
