Ex gratia enhanced for those killed by elephants
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: Forest Minister S. Vijayarama Raju has announced hike in the ex gratia payable to families affected by the deaths caused in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts by Orissa elephants.
He told reporters here on Thursday that the families had already been paid each Rs. 1 lakh and now, another Rs. 1.5 lakh would be allowed to each. He said the Assam government was paying only Rs. 30,000 as ex gratia for death.
He said compensation would also be paid against the crops damaged by the elephants once the enumeration which was on by Revenue and Agriculture departments was completed. He justified the government proposal to declare 128 sq km area of forest in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts which the Orissa herd was using as its corridor, as an elephant sanctuary on the ground that only nine habitations would be evicted. He said only 250 families would be affected.
