HYDERABAD: The government has asked the State Backward Classes Commission to prepare a report on the socio-economic conditions of Kapu community to enable it take a decision on extending reservation to them. At a high-level meeting held to discuss issues relating to BCs at the Secretariat on Thursday, Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy suggested that the present commission could chose two options to go about its job -- study meticulously and finalise the report already prepared by the Hanurav Committee or commence a survey of its own and prepare a new report. Speaking to reporters later, BC Welfare Minister M. Mukesh said after receiving report, the government might consider providing reservation in education and employment to Kapus by including them in the present list of BCs and enhancing the reservation percentage to BCs in general, subject to approval by the Supreme Court. Mr. Mukesh said the government’s decision to waive the arrears of loans taken by BC beneficiaries from their cooperative finance corporation up to Rs. 1 lakh, would apply to educational loans also.
