High Court quashes case filed against Kharge in Mysore

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Justice C.R. Kumaraswamy on Thursday quashed a suo motu case registered by the Mysore police against the State Congress President M. Mallikarjun Kharge. In the December 2006 by-election poll held from Chamundeshwari constituency, in which Mr. Siddaramaiah of the Congress was elected, Mr. Kharge was accused of remaining in the constituency on the eve of polling with the intention to indulge in electoral malpractices. The police had registered the case against him.

Plea refused

Fifteen Pre-University students of Seshadripuram College, Magadi Road, on Thursday petitioned the Karnataka High Court against the refusal by the authorities to permit them to appear for the second year PU examination which has commenced.

The students claimed that they had not been given hall tickets to appear for the examination, because they were short of the requisite attendance. They urged the court to permit them to appear for the rest of the papers. The Government opposed the petitions, saying that attendance shortage could not be condoned and that the students could not claim any exemption from the rule that made it compulsory for them to have 75 per cent attendance. Justice Ashok Hinchigeri refused to pass any interim order as prayed for by the students and adjourned further hearing on the case.

Hearing adjourned

A Division Bench adjourned further hearing on a petition relating to Joseph Chacko, who is accused of cheating non-resident Indians of crores of rupees by promising to build world-class apartments for them, and later reneging from the promise.
