|
HYDERABAD: The International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has launched a Centre of Excellence in Genomics (CEG) for genetic improvement of crops and a Bio-Food Knowledge Centre (BFKC) for developing a platform for R&D, innovation and commercialisation in food processing.
Announcing the launch of the centres, ICRISAT’s Director-General William Dar said CEG was established in collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology, which has provided a grant of US $ 1 million, while the BKFC was set up at agri-science park with US $ 500,000 support from the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
Technological options
Dr.Dar said the CEG would provide new technological options and accelerate crop improvement by reducing the time required to develop new varieties by half. He said the fully operational facility could be used as a service centre by agricultural research institutes located in India and abroad. .
