Builders to suspend work

KOCHI: Builders and contractors in Thripunithura decided to suspend work from Thursday in protest against the demand by construction workers for a hike in wages and the ongoing strike by a section of workers.

Addressing a press meet here, the builders and contractors demanded parity in wages across the district.

Hitherto, the workers in Thripunithura area were getting more than the workers in the city.

Since the cost of building materials had gone up along with tax burdens, the workers demand for a 20 per cent hike in wages was not acceptable said M. Unnikrishnan of Royal Projects.

He said the builders usually give a yearly hike, but this time the workers were demanding an unreasonable rise in wages.

Following the agitation by workers, a few small builders and contractors had started giving increased wages, but it was not accepted by the majority of builders, Mr. Unnikrishnan said.

Supporting the builders from Thripunithura, all builders and contractors in the district will lay off work on March 26.
