Staff Reporter

1.10 lakh names added and 6,886 deleted between February 18 and 26

Voters’ list to be updated till one week before the last date for nomination

Only 21 per cent of the voters have electoral card

BANGALORE: The updated electoral rolls for the Assembly constituencies of Bangalore Urban district with names of 40.17 lakh voters were notified on Thursday even as the electoral rolls for the redrawn constituencies would be completed in one week. The total number of voters in Bangalore Urban district has gone up from 39.13 lakh to 40.17 lakh after undertaking additions and deletions.

Bangalore Urban Deputy Commissioner M.A. Sadiq said the updated rolls had been notified after adding 1.10 lakh voters, and 6,886 names have been deleted between February 18 and 26. “We had received 1.13 lakh applications for addition of which 1.10 lakh names have been added while 6,886 names have been deleted from a list that sought deletion of 7,279 names,” he said.

Fresh names were added and names were deleted from the voters’ list after the administration called for objection between February 18 and 26 following a house-to-house survey that was conducted to revise voters’ list as per the directions of Election Commission. Names were deleted from the list following death, migration and repetitions.

To be updated

Mr. Sadiq said: “Although it is the final list, we will continue to add and delete names till seven days before the last date of nominations when the election process is set in motion.” The delimitation rolls was under progress, and it would be published within a week. However, Election Commission had not decided about the time to be given for objection.

While the number of constituencies has gone up from 12 to 28 in Bangalore, 21 constituencies would come under the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the rest in the Bangalore Urban district. The four Assembly constituencies of Yelahanka, Varthur, Anekal and Uttarahalli in the urban district had been bifurcated into Yelahanka, Byatarayanapura, Yeshwanthpur, Dasarahalli, Mahadevapura (SC), Bangalore South and Anekal constitutencies.

Mr. Sadiq said that only 21 per cent of those who were in the voters list in Bangalore Urban district had voter’s identification card. “The Election Commission will decide shortly whether to issue ID cards or ask for some other documents for identification,” he added.

New voters

During the electoral roll revision for Bangalore Urban district, as many as 1.14 lakh young voters who had attained 18 years enrolled themselves between November 2, 2007 and February 26, 2008. Similarly, names of 28,664 voters above the age of 80 were also added to the list that was announced on Thursday.
