Nurses from Calicut University in a fix

KOCHI: The future of about 500 nurses has been affected by Calicut University’s insistence on compulsory internship for nurses who completed their course in 2006, a statement from the Joint Council of Graduate Nurses has said.

Nurses of the 2002 batch from various universities in the State were exempted from the compulsory internship that was introduced in the later years.

However, Calicut University chose not to exempt the students of this batch.

A recent order by the High Court on February 25 had asked the graduate nurses to be benefited by exempting them from compulsory internship.

The university order on internship was issued in June 2007, six months after the 2002 batch completed their course.

By this time most students had joined various institutions and had signed bond agreements too, making it impossible to be relieved from duties.

Realising the problem the government issued an order exempting the 2002 batch from internship, but Calicut University continued with its order.

This has prevented the nurses of the particular batch from registering with the Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council, whereas students of the same batch from other universities have now been registered for over a year. Students who had taken educational loans would find it difficult to repay the amount if they go in for with internship, during which they are paid a stipend of Rs.2,000. The affected nurses said that if they had known about internship before joining the course there would not have been any problem.

The academic board of the Calicut University had failed to listen to the pleas of the graduate nurses and their parents, said the statement of the Joint Council of Graduate Nurses.

The board that was supposed to be for the welfare of the students had rejected the request of the graduates, it stated.
