Sheila describes her Government as “responsive” NEW DELHI: The Delhi Assembly on Thursday passed the Motion of Thanks to the Lieutenant-Governor for his address after a statement by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in which she described her government as “responsive” and one that cared for the poor. Concluding the discussion on the motion, Ms. Dikshit said her government had taken concrete steps to improve the power and water situation in the Capital and raise the standard of living of the poor. She said the poor were now being provided subsidised power and 4 lakh low-cost houses were also being constructed for them. Moreover, one-time free lunch to the poor was being made available under the “Aapki Rasoi” scheme. For the farmers, she said, compensation for acquired land had been trebled. “On the power front, concrete steps have been taken to enhance Delhi’s own generation. A 1,500 MW plant is being set up at Bawana, 750 MW each has been tied up with Haryana and Bamnauli and NDPL is setting up its own 108 MW captive plant.” Noting that the quality of water being supplied in Delhi was “excellent”, Ms. Dikshit said the transport system had also been made more reliable, pollution had been reduced and Delhi’s green cover was being increased from 19 per cent to 25 per cent. She said the Planning Commission had complimented Delhi’s effort and released an additional Rs.1,000 crore for cleaning of the Yamuna and improving the public transport. Ms. Dikshit said the economic survey tabled by Finance Minister A. K. Walia earlier in the day had also presented a healthy picture of Delhi.
