BANGALORE: It was a special occasion for presspersons as well as customers at the Reliance Timeout here on Thursday.

The occasion was the release of two DVD pack of songs rendered by Manna Dey. As a bonus, those present were treated to an evergreen number by the veteran singer himself.

Manna Dey unveiled the first copy of the DVD at the launch of Shemaraoo Entertainment’s Ultimate Unremix, featuring his original video songs, at Reliance Timeout here.

“It is a new and different experience for me. Thanks to technology, such things are possible today. Sitting at home, my listeners can listen to old melodies,” he said. When a reporter requested him to sing her favourite song, Mr. Dey demurred initially. But after some persuasion, the legend rendered the classic “Laga chunari mein daag…”

He said “the song, directed by late friend Roshan, is one of my most prized ones. It is one of the rare songs made for film. The song is a must at all my performances both in India and abroad. A difficult classical melody, I put my heart and soul into it.”

The veteran singer said that although he liked this song very much, he would not differentiate between his songs.

To a question, he said the song that really taxed his vocal chords was the one from Kabuliwala, “Ae mere pyare watan, ae mere ujale chaman, tujh pe dil qurban”. “I had to sing this song from one corner of my throat to convey the beautiful sentiments expressed in it,” he said.

He did not see much problem with remixes provided they were done properly. “If not, they are just nonsense,” he said.

The DVDs were released in the presence of Atul Maru, Joint Managing Director, Shemaroo Entertainment, and Deepender Kapany, Head of Reliance TimeOut. The two DVDs have 25 songs each.

The songs featured in are from the films: Waqt, Shri 420, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Mera Naam Joker and Kabuliwala.
