Layout on 4,814 acres planned in Bangalore

Decision taken to implement KSHIP-II with external aid

BANGALORE: To meet the increased demand for housing in Bangalore, the State Government on Thursday decided to develop Kempe Gowda Layout on 4,814 acres at Kengeri on the outskirts of the city.

Addressing presspersons after a meeting of the Executive Committee here, Governor Rameshwar Thakur said the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) would develop the layout at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,700 crore.

As many as 60,000 housing sites would be created.

Weaker sections

For providing houses for economically weaker sections of the society, 20,000 houses would be constructed on 120 acres in Kengeri, he said.

A decision had been taken to implement the Karnataka State Highways Improvement Project II (KSHIP-II) with the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank loans.

World Bank aid

The World Bank would provide $300 million while the ABD would grant credit of $320 million to develop about 3,400 km of State highways in the next five years.

Based on the request of the State, the Centre had enhanced the World Bank credit from $ 200 million to $ 300 million, S. Krishna Kumar, adviser the Governor said. The KSHIP–I was completed last December.

The Centre had reallocated to the State 100 MW of power from the unallocated share from the Central generating stations which had earlier been reduced.

The Centre earlier had increased the quota for Tamil Nadu while decreasing the same for Karnataka.

This had been informed to the State by Union Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde.

The State would get 100 MW from Friday, he said.

Illegal mining

To check illegal mining, the Executive Committee approved the Karnataka Mineral (Regulation) of Transport Rules 2008, based on the Centre’s draft model rules. Under the rules, specific individual vehicle permits would be given to miners within seven days.

The Lokayukta too had suggested the implementation of such rules.

The committee had accepted the second report of the pay panel on allowances to government employees and it would be imp lemented from April 2008.

The estimated cost to the State exchequer was Rs. 150 crore per year.

The committee had given administrative approval for the release of Rs. 25 crore to the Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences, Bellary, to create infrastructure to raise MBBS seats from 100 to 150, Mr. Krishnakumar said.

Separate wing

A decision had been taken to form a separate engineering wing for the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department in the State.

Engineers from PWD and Water Resources Department would be drawn to form the wing. The committee reviewed the Bangalore Traffic Improvement Project which was launched last year and decided to set up a Traffic Management Centre at the Ashok Nagar police station in Bangalore, and Rs. 10 crore would be released for the purpose, P.K.H. Tharakan, adviser to the Governor, said.

Approvals

Administrative approvals had also been given to release Rs. 9.5 crore for the Uppinangady-Kadaba road in Puttur Taluk and Rs. 25-crore road project from Virajpet to Kerala border in Kodagu district, the Governor said.
