“Differently-abled must be brought into the mainstream of society” NEW DELHI: A two-day national congress on “Disability studies in secondary and higher education in India” ended at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre here on Thursday. Organised by the Society for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies, the congress was inaugurated by Union Culture and Tourism Minister Ambika Soni, who underlined the necessity for providing a level playing field to differently-abled persons from all walks of life. “They must be brought into the mainstream of society,” she said. While noted journalist Kuldip Nayar exhorted the physically challenged persons to launch a mass movement to bring out attitudinal changes in society at the grassroots level, former AIIMS director Dr. P. K. Dave called for establishment of full-fledged rehabilitation centres in all medical colleges and universities. Society for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies’ honorary president G. N. Karna recapitulated the development of disability studies as an academic discipline. He advocated the need to constitute a model curriculum development committee towards realising the goal of a “Comprehensive Action Plan on Disability”.
