B.C. Khanduri DEHRA DUN: The Uttarakhand Government has constituted a high-power committee to bring about reforms in the slums and pave the way for their regularisation. Announcing this here on Friday, Chief Minister Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri said the emphasis will be on making the living conditions in the slums better as the poorest of the poor stay there. Mr. Khanduri also announced the decision to establish a Safai Karamchari Ayog to suggest reforms to bring about a qualitative change in the lives of the safai karamcharis and also suggest ways to introduce better sanitation in the State. He also announced a 6 per cent increase in the dearness allowance for all State Government employees at par with the Central staff. To give relief to the land lease holders, the date for applying to get property converted into freehold has been extended to July 31. Similarly the stamp duty exemption for loans taken under the Chandra Singh Garhwali Scheme has been doubled to Rs.20 lakh, Mr. Khanduri said. Allaying fears expressed in certain circles, Mr. Khanduri said his government is all for judicious industrialisation and those willing to invest in the hills would be given additional incentives.
