Bettors move court
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Twenty one persons, including a woman, arrested by the Bangalore police for allegedly engaging in illegal betting at the Bangalore Turf Club have moved the Karnataka High Court against the issue of process (summons) against them by a local court in Bangalore.
The petitioners urged the court to quash the local court proceedings, saying that it is illegal, arbitrary and unconstitutional. In their petition, Srikanth and others said on July 2, 2006, High Grounds police claimed to have received credible information that illegal betting was taking place at the Summer Races.
The petitioners said the police took them into custody, alleging that they were not paying the Race Course Tax. Cases were booked against them under the Karnataka Police Act and Sections 11 and 12 of Mysore Betting Tax Act, 1950. They said they are licensed bettors. Justice K. Bhaktavatsala asked the petitioners to produce their licences and adjourned hearing on the case to March 24.
