CHENNAI: Concerted steps should be taken to step up the rate of manufacturing based on the customer and the market for balanced growth of the Indian economy, V. Krishnamurthy, chairman, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC), said on Friday. Delivering his special address after felicitating the winners of the Deming Award at a function organised by the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), he said a perfect balance had to be maintained between agriculture, industry and manufacturing sectors to achieve the desired results. The Deming award was given to Rane Holdings, Brakes India, Sundaram Clayton and Lucas TVS. While urging the Indian manufacturing sector to maintain quality standards, he said the winners had made their company and the country proud by demonstrating their commitment, passion and desire to excel. “This message has to be taken to a larger and younger audience. These companies have reached high standards in manufacturing due to the contribution by their leaders. That’s why many companies prefer to set up base in Tamil Nadu,” he said. P. Leelaram, vice-president, business development & TQM of Rane Holdings, said four of the seven group companies had won the Deming Award. V. Narasimhan, executive director, Brakes India Foundry division, said they would like to stay ahead of competition by three years. C. Narasimhan, advisor, Sundaram Clayton, said they aimed to be a total lean enterprise. N. Ravichandran, president (operations), Lucas TVS, said their goal was to achieve seven zeroes in place i.e. zero defects, zero changeover, zero delay, zero breakdown, zero inventory, zero waste and zero injury.
