Romance and women

The views expressed in the article “Romance and the Indian woman” (Open Page, March 16) are true only to some extent. Men alone cannot be blamed for the end of romance between couples after the first few years of marriage. Nor is the empowerment of women, or unbridled materialism or self-abnegation (Letters, March 17) the cause. Husband and wife should learn to adjust and adapt themselves to the conditions. Romance can be experienced continuously, in different ways at different times, if the partners understand each other.

Capt J. Harikumar,

Salem

* * * * *

Thanks to education, financial independence, limited number of children, and the lack of having to shoulder the burden of a joint family, women, it seems, have enough time for trivia. Their emancipation has made them insecure. Romance can be sustained only in films and fiction, but real life is hard. Romance is the privilege of the rich but the richness does not spring from matter. It emanates from a kind, self-effacing heart.

Radhanath Behera,

Koraput
