22 elephants for the festival


KOTTAYAM: The police have put in place strict traffic regulation in the town on Saturday, in connection with the Pakalpooram being organised as part of the festival at Sri Mahadevar temple.

As part of the arrangements, parking has been banned on the roads surrounding the temple, from Saturday morning. By noon, vehicular traffic on these roads would also . Vehicular traffic to the Thirunakkara area through the pocket roads too would be prohibited on the day. The police have denied private buses their entry to the Old Private Stand at Thirunakkara from Saturday noon.

There would be traffic control on the by lanes through which the smaller pooram processions arrive at Thirunakkara. According to the police, to minimise the inconvenience to the public, traffic control will be minimal on MC Road, Sastri Road, K.K. Road and T.B. Road. This is for the second consecutive time that the temple authorities have scheduled a Pakalpooram in connection with the festival.

According to organisers, 22 elephants, among the most revered by the believers, participate in the pooram celebrations being organised as a replica of the Thrissur Pooram.

The celebrations are expected begin by 4 p.m. when pooram processions from 11 temples in the locale moves on to the eastern court yard of the temple. Eleven elephants each will flank the Eastern and Western sides of the courtyard even as elephant Guruvayoor Valia Kesavan will come out of the temple gates carrying the Thidambu of the deity at the Sri Mahadevar temple. Mangalamkunnu Karnan will carry the ‘thidambu’ on the Eastern side.

‘Melam’

The ‘melam’ will start when both the sides stand face to face on the Eastern and Western sides of the temple court yard, in direct replay of the Thrissur Pooram.

The 60 member team on the Western side will be led by Peruvanam Kuttan Marar and that on the Eastern side by Mattannur Sanakrankutty. This will be followed by the Kudamattom ritual by Thiruvambadi and Parammekkavu Devaswoms.

The tenth day of the Festival, which falls on Sunday, will commence with the ‘ezhunnallathu’ to ‘aarattu kadavu’ in the morning.

The ‘aarattu’ is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nagaswaram recital by Thiruvizha Jayasanker and sangeetha sadass by Madurai N Seshagopal will be held during the evening and the festival will conclude with the reception to the aarattu scheduled for one o clock in the night.
