MALAPPURAM: Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed has demanded compensation for farmers of Malappuram district who had suffered losses in the unseasonal rain in the State. Flash floodsAddressing newspersons after attending a review meeting with Revenue officials here on Friday, Mr. Ahamed said more than 1,500 farmers in the district had been affected by the flash floods. The loss, according to an initial estimate, was put at Rs.2 crore, he said. Mr. Ahamed said crops such as coconut, plantain, areca nut, paddy, betel and vegetables in about 1,000 hectares spread across 17 panchayats were damaged in the rain.
