THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Labour and Excise P. K. Gurudasan said here on Friday that the liquor policy for next year emphasised protection and growth of the sector. In a statement here, the Minister said the policy aimed at eliminating benamis in the running of toddy shops. For that, it had been specified that photo-affixed licences be displayed in the shops. The Minister noted that the number of coconut and other palms for tapping had been fixed on the basis of discussions between the government and labour unions. Licensees were required to produce proof of financial capacity. The shops and its workers should ensure that only pure toddy is sold through the shops. Cleanliness and sanitation should be maintained. Hotels and bars should maintain the highest standards of cleanliness. Mr. Gurudasan maintained that bootlegging and sale of spurious liquor threatened both the industry and society. The government was aware of the operation of spirit mafia with inter-State links. Their operations caused problems for the economy. The government would take stern measures against the anti-social elements working in the area. He called for the cooperation of people’s representatives, political parties, trade unions and prohibition council in preventing the marketing of spurious liquor.
