Girl medicos to get hostel

Big relief for Vardhman Mahavir Medical College students

NEW DELHI: Ending a longstanding problem of lack of accommodation for Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery girl students, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College attached to Safdarjung Hospital here is going to offer hostel facilities to its students this year.

This comes as a boon for female students who were otherwise forced to commute from home, stay in rented accommodation nearby or stay in the college dormitory. Now ready to be occupied are single rooms which can take in 170 students.

The facility, which previously housed staff nurses working at Safdarjung Hospital, has been renovated at a cost of Rs.70 lakh and comes with a standard mess, playground and 24-hour private security.

“This is a big step for the college that we have been able to offer residential facilities to our female students who were previously either forced to travel from home every day or stay in the college dormitory. The process of allotment of rooms will be initiated soon so that the students get a chance to settle down before the next academic session starts,” said Vardhman Mahavir Medical College Principal Jagdish Prasad.

“We have been trying to have the rooms vacated, renovated and made available to our students for sometime now. The facility gives students adequate place to study and a safe environment. We are aware of the trouble that female students were faced with while commuting or staying in rented accommodation. Hopefully this year onwards it will change,” he added.

“From 1987-88 onward these rooms were illegally occupied by the nursing staff and their families, who have now been shifted out. Alternative accommodation has been offered to them in Sriniwaspuri and Dwarka,” said Dr. Prasad.
