Compendium of lectures launched

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A two-volume compendium of lectures by A.R. Lakshmanan, chairman, Law Commission of India, was formally launched on Friday.

“Voice of Justice” by Mr. Lakshmanan was described by speakers as a “priceless collection of lectures” that denoted the author’s erudition and grip on a range of subjects, from corporate law and human rights to feminism and spirituality, and his capacity to handle all types of audiences.

Chief Justice of the Madras High Court A. P. Shah, who released Volume I of the collection by handing over the first copy to Election Commissioner Navin Chawla, said the wide-ranging book would appeal to a cross section of people outside the compass of the legal fraternity.

The work reflected both the amount of research that preceded each lecture as well as the author’s commitment to the cause of the common man, he said.

Mr. Chawla, who described Mr. Justice Lakshmanan as not “just a judge but a great humanist” said the compendium captured the widest possible experience that an individual, however elevated a position that he or she enjoyed, could bring to the table.

“Man of method”

Justice V.S. Sirpurkar, Supreme Court Judge, who released Volume II by handing over the first copy to Madras High Court Judge P.D. Dinakaran, said the author was a “man of method and tremendous industry” whose practice of preserving even the notes penned while hearing arguments was amazing.

Mr. Justice Dinakaran said Mr. Lakshmanan, regarded by the Bar as an important legal architect and by the Bench as a judicial statesman, had come out with a book that was “deserving of a place on everyone’s shelf.”

A.R.L. Sundaresan, Madras High Court counsel and representatives of the publishers — Universal Law Publishing, New Delhi and Andhra Law Times, Hyderabad — also spoke.
