Colourful rejoicing: Youth Congress activists led by its district unit president G. Mohan Reddy celebrating the cancellation of the Bhongir meet in Nalgonda on Friday.

NALGONDA: Activists of the Youth Congress here on Friday evening celebrated the news of senior Congress leaders’ decision to cancel the proposed meeting at Bhongir on March 24.

Soon after the television channels flashed the news, they burst crackers and danced with joy. They replicated Holi atmosphere a day before the festival of colours.

‘Drop idea’

The district unit president of the Youth Congress Gummula Mohan Reddy, who undertook fast-unto-death since Wednesday requesting the seniors to drop the idea, was offered lemon juice by his colleagues.

Mr. Reddy also joined the celebrations at the clock tower centre.

“I am extremely happy to receive the news about the cancellation of the meet. The leaders deserve wholehearted compliments,” he told The Hindu adding that disputes could be settled within the family of the Congress.

He declared that he would wash the feet of senior leaders with milk as was announced before launching the indefinite fast at the clock tower three days ago since they honoured the suggestions of the high command and saved the Congress from humiliation.

Padayatra continues

Meanwhile the ‘Telangana Aatmagourava Padayatra” launched by former DCC general secretary Dubbaka Narasimha Reddy in support of the seniors reached Chityal by night after covering 40 kilometers.

Police played a vital role in averting any confrontation between the supporters of Mr.Narasimha Reddy and the local MLA Komatireddy Venkat Reddy in the district headquarters.

A large number of TRS activists attended a public meeting held at the DEO’s office.

In fact Mr.Narasimha Reddy’s yatra was supposed to end his march at the Bhongir meet. Now it is not clear whether he dropped the idea in the wake of the cancellation of the meet.
