Flood warning issued in summer after nine years

Level at Vaigai dam more than double that of previous summer


Last summer, the level was just 31.10 feet; now it is 66.08 feet

Rainfall at Periyar dam site was heavy


THENI: After a gap of nine years, Public Works Department officials have issued first flood warning to five southern districts situated on the banks of Vagai River this summer, as the storage level in Vagai dam touched 66.08 feet (full level 72 feet) here on Friday evening.

Inflow into the dam was 5,531 cusecs and the discharge was 41 cusecs.

The level at the dam in the previous summer was just 31.10 feet.

With continuous rain and heavy flow in Kottakudi, Vaigai and Mullaperiyar rivers, storage level has been steadily increasing to the total capacity of the dam.

Moreover, Vaigai dam received the highest rainfall in the district on Thursday night.

Periyar dam

Storage level shot up sharply in Periyar dam also. On an average, the level rose by two foot a day since Thursday.

There was a manifold increase in inflow into the dam following torrential rain in the dam site as well as its catchments and Thekkadi.

Storage level in Periyar dam touched 122.20 feet, (permissible storage 136 feet), up by two feet, compared to 118.5 feet the previous day.

The inflow into the dam was 4,907 cusecs (previous day inflow was 3,542 cusecs.). With no discharge for irrigation, storage level has been increasing sharply in the past four days. Rainfall at the dam site was heavy.

Highest

Shanmuga Nadhi dam has 45.50 foot of water as it had received highest amount of rainfall in the district between Tuesday and Thursday.

Heavy rain lashed almost all places in the district. Rainfall recorded at various places in the district in mm:

Periyar dam 42; Thekkadi 45; Gudalur 46; Uthamapalayam 40; Shanmuga Nadhi dam 53; Veerapandi 32; and Vaigai dam 54.
