Thiruvananthapuram
Flooding in the Thampanoor and East Fort areas draws residents’ ire. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Federation of Residents Associations, Thiruvananthapuram, (FRAT) has urged the government to find a lasting solution to the problem of flooding in the Thampanoor and East Fort areas. A press note quoting FRAT president Pattom Sasidharan Nair and general secretary Paraniyam Devakumar said successive governments had failed to resolve the problem that had turned into a curse and a shame for the capital city. They said crores of rupees had been wasted on unscientific flood control projects that had failed to achieve the desired result. “All of them have turned out to be white elephants. Squandering public money on such projects is an insult to democracy,” they said. The press note called on the government to view the issue seriously. “It is not only city residents who are forced to put up with the recurrent flooding. It affects people from all over the world who visit the capital city for various purposes. Unless something is done immediately, it could even pose a serious setback for the State’s attempt to make it big on the global tourist circuit,” it warned. The federation called on the government to launch a scientifically-designed flood control project coordinating various government departments and agencies. Pointing out that careless garbage disposal was part of the problem, the federation also demanded stern action to deter the public from dumping waste into the canals and drains. The press note warned that FRAT would mobilise city residents for an agitation to press the government for immediate action on the issue.
