HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) Limited is planning to lay a line to the international airport at Shamshabad as part of its second phase of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), said its Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy on Friday.

He was making a presentation at the three-day Hyderabad IT Summit being organised by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, FICCI and Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council at the Hyderabad International Conventional Centre in Madhapur. Mr. Reddy said the public transport link to the airport was a priority work and it could be mixture of elevated and on ground metro rail system. Work might start as soon as the phase one of the metro rail being taken up in three busy corridors of about 66 kilometres is grounded in two to three months time. The airport link would be from Falaknuma for a distance of about 12 kilometres. It would extension of Line Two of the first phase between Jubilee Bus Station in Secunderabad to Falaknuma for a distance of 14.78 kilometres. The other two routes of Phase one are from Miyapur to L.B.Nagar for 19.87 kilometres (Line one) and Habsiguda to Shilparamam for 21.74 kilometres (Line three). The entire first phase will be on elevated platform built mostly on the road median at a total cost of about Rs. 8, 500 crore on a public-private partnership model. The Central government has already assured a viability gap funding of 30 per cent while the State will pick up 10 per cent. The rest will be invested by one of five private international and national consortia in the race.

The HMR MD expects the entire phase one to be operational in four years by 2011-2012 and the financial bids are to be called next month to finalise the Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) developer by June. All metro stations would be world class with adequate parking and circulating areas.

A ‘merry go around’ shuttle bus would be operated from all stations to pick up and drop passengers in the residential colonies near a station. Mr. Reddy said each station has about 10-12 colonies and the buses would cater to these areas. There will be proper connectivity to all important and existing rail terminals, MMTS stations and three main bus stations.
