CHENNAI: Close on the heels of the arrest of a government employee on Thursday on charges of cheating two banks, the Central Crime Branch police arrested a manager and a field officer of one of the banks in this connection on Friday. Based on a complaint from the chief manager of the bank, the police had arrested Radha (54), an employee of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Engineering Department, Madhuranthakam. She had allegedly submitted fake salary certificates and obtained loans to the extent of Rs. 62 lakh. After a scrutiny of the documents furnished to the bank, the police questioned M.Arjunan (54), who was then the manager of the branch and the then field officer R.Srinivasan (52). According to the police, the two bank officials had disbursed the loans to the accused. Based on the confessions of the two officials, the police found that the documents such as salary certificate were not verified and the passport size photographs affixed in the personal loan applications were fake. Cases under IPC Section 419 (punishment for cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating), 465 (forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 read with 109 (using as genuine a forged document and abetment) were registered. The two bank officials were produced before a city court which remanded them to judicial custody. Investigating officers at the Central Crime Branch said that the savings bank accounts opened in the names of various persons were not done as per the rules. A senior police officer said that the bank managers and officers in charge of disbursing loans should verify the documents enclosed with the loan applications. Verification, as per the norms, with the organisations from where the borrowers submitted their salary certificates would reveal whether they are genuine or fake, he added.
