CHENNAI: P.R. Gokulakrishnan, former Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, was felicitated on Friday by people from various walks of life on his 81st birthday.

Presiding over the function, M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Pro-Chancellor of the Annamalai University, said Mr. Gokulakrishnan was instrumental in forming the ‘Manavazhagar Mandram,’ which was performing yeoman service for Tamil language. He donated Rs.1.81 lakh to the ‘mandram.’

Rm.Veerappan, president of the MGR Kazhagam, wanted the ‘mandram’ to compile the speeches of Mr. Gokulakrishnan in book form, for the benefit of the younger generation.

Pon. Bhaskaran, retired High Court Judge, said though Mr. Gokulakrishan associated himself with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, he never mixed politics with his profession. Advocates belonging to various political parties worked under him as his juniors.

K. Gnanaprakasam, retired High Court Judge, said though Mr. Gokulakrishnan became a High Court judge at a young age it was unfortunate he was not elevated to the Supreme Court.

Mr. Gokulakrishnan, who was the patron of the ‘mandram,’ in his acceptance speech, said he considered the occasion as an opportunity to explain its activities.

A souvenir was released on the occasion by Mr. Rm. Veerappan.
