CHENNAI: All-India Congress Committee treasurer Motilal Vohra and V. Arunkumar, in-charge of party affairs in Tamil Nadu, on Friday inspected Kamarajar Arangam and held discussions with trustees of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Charitable Trust, that manages it. The Trust has a huge landed property in the heart of the city including Kamarajar Arangam, which is located on a site of 187 grounds. After the party split in 1996, the property was under the control of the Tamil Maanila Congress headed by G.K.Moopanar. AgreementDuring that period an agreement was signed with a property developer for construction of multi-storied commercial complex. It did not come through as the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority refused to give permission. After the merger of the TMC with the Congress, the Trust came under the control of the AICC, which appointed new trustees including TNCC president M. Krishnasswamy, Union Minister G. K.Vasan, Jayanthi Natarajan, Sudarsanam Natchiappan, MP, and Congress Legislature party deputy leader D. Yesoda. Mr. Vohra, who is in-charge of party properties located throughout the country, enquired about the activities of the Trust. As per the Trust deed, educational assistance should be given to students belonging to lower strata of society every year. For the last two years, no educational assistance was being distributed, a party source said. Now Trust properties are being managed by an administrative officer appointed by the State Cooperative Department. The Trust was formed by Kamaraj and K. Srinivsan of The Hindu in 1954.
