New underpass proposed near domestic terminal

Parul Sharma

It will help in addressing traffic congestion on way to airport

‘The DDA has cleared the underpass proposal and construction will begin soon’

‘Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna is also in favour of construction of the underpass’

NEW DELHI: The Delhi traffic police are working on short and long term plans to address traffic congestion on the road leading to the domestic wing of Indira Gandhi International Airport here. Talks are going on for construction of an underpass at the first roundabout immediately after the flyover. The underpass will help in separating Dwarka-bound traffic and ease bottlenecks around the roundabout.

“Vehicles coming from the flyover and National Highway-8 that are headed for Dwarka will merge and take the new underpass to reach their destination while those going to the airport and coming from the domestic terminal will continue to be at the surface level,” informed Joint Commissioner (Traffic) S. N. Srivastava, who is overseeing this project.

“An underpass is a permanent solution to the traffic problems at the roundabout near the domestic terminal. The plan was discussed at a meeting with the Delhi Development Authority about 10 days ago. The DDA has cleared the underpass proposal and construction will begin soon,” he added.

According to sources, Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna was also in favour of construction of the underpass that can tackle the traffic woes of the commuters on that stretch. However, it will take at least a year for the underpass to be constructed as the process for inviting the tenders is yet to begin. “The entire traffic police team has been proactively working on various initiatives to improve traffic movement around the airport. We are happy to assist them in our endeavour of minimising inconvenience to the travelling public. Various initiatives are being taken to ease traffic congestion at Delhi airport,” said an official of Delhi International Airport (Private) Limited.

“The Joint Commissioner has made the airport one of his focus areas. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sharat Sinha took it upon himself to explore new traffic plan and devised alternative ways to ease vehicular movement. His colleagues, Traffic inspectors Shamsher Singh and Ram Chander Meena, are personally supervising the new arrangement as the traffic flow to the domestic terminal has increased, especially after the opening of Rao Tula Ram Marg flyover,” he added. About a month ago, the route for traffic coming from the airport towards the city was altered slightly.
