KOCHI: Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar on Friday said that it was for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to examine the demand for change in alignment of the proposed Kochi Metro Rail . At a press conference, the Minister said it was not the question of “justification of the changes” in the alignment as demanded by traders. But the question was whether the demand was “practical” or not. He said that the nodal agency for implementing the project was the DMRC. The representation given by the traders had been given to the Central government and the DMRC. He said that the rail project was in principle approved in 2005. There was enough time to suggest changes in the alignments. The Minister said that a proposal to extend the rail to Angamaly and Mattancherry would be taken up in the second stage of the project. The project was yet to get final approval from the Planning Commission and the Central Cabinet sub-committee. The project would be implemented in a time bound manner when the final approval came through. Replying to another question, he said that the rules relating to the registration of marriages were made on the basis of the suggestions at a recent meeting of religious leaders called by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan. The rules would be submitted before the Supreme Court. He said that further changes in the rules could only be incorporated within the limits of Supreme Court verdict on the issue.
