Fake currency notes seized from one of them in Bangalore

Bangalore: The Bangalore police on Saturday arrested a Bangladeshi, said to be an associate of the two suspected militants gunned down by the Mumbai police on March 11, and seized fake Indian currency notes printed abroad from him. Based on his information, 15 more Bangladeshis, including four women, were arrested.

Sleuths from the Anti Terrorist Cell of the City Crime Branch arrested Sabu Sheik (18) from near the Belathur bus- stop on the city’s outskirts and seized 12 fake notes of Rs. 1000 denomination.

Highly placed sources in the city police told The Hindu that on March 11, the Mumbai police shot dead two suspected Bangladeshi militants at Kashmira in Thane district and seized fake Indian currency notes from them.

Subsequently, the Mumbai police exchanged information with their Bangalore counterparts on an international fake currency network. This led to the arrest of Sabu Sheik.

The fact that fake currency was being pumped into India indicated that some terror network was behind the racket that was aimed at destabilising the Indian economy, the sources said.

At a press conference, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Gopal B. Hosur said Sabu Sheikh came here to circulate fake currency notes. Investigations were on to ascertain whether he had links with any terror outfits and also who put him on the job.

The 15 others did not have passports and were staying at Hoskote and Kadugodi on the outskirts of the city for the past six months. The Bangladeshis, who visited Mumbai before coming here, were booked under the Foreigners Act, the police said.

While a press note from the police said that the arrested persons were into immoral trafficking and other illegal activities, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) N.D. Mulla said no case was registered in this regard.
