Special Correspondent
GULBARGA: Miscreants set on fire a North Eastern Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) bus and stoned another bus belonging to the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation during clashes between two communities during the celebration of Holi in Aland town in Gulbarga district on Saturday evening.
Inspector General of Police (North Eastern Range) M.V. Murthy and Superintendent of Police Manish Karbhikar rushed to the spot with additional forces to beef up security.
The Aland tahsildar has imposed prohibitory orders for two days as a precautionary measure.
A woman conductor of the NEKRTC suffered minor injuries in the head from the stone throwing. A few more were reported injured. Tension prevailed in Aland town, which has a large concentration of Muslims, over the way Holi was being celebrated in the town. There was a minor clash between Hindu and Muslim boys near Mahadev temple. The elders of both the communities intervened and brought the situation under control. However, violence broke out in the evening when a procession of Holi revellers was allegedly stoned by Muslim youth who said water was splashed on the walls of the Bada Masjid in the town. Although the situation was under control, an uneasy calm prevailed in the town.Reports said that the police had picked up 20 persons in connection with the clashes. A peace committee meeting is likely to be held in Aland town to maintain calm.
