Around 10,000 saplings to be planted this year Mayor urges residents to make city greener CHENNAI: Mayor M. Subramanian on Friday urged residents to make the city greener by planting tree saplings on their birthdays. Speaking at a sapling-planting function at Mullai Nagar MTC bus terminus in Vyasarpadi, he said the Chennai Corporation planted 10,000 saplings last year and would plant another 10,000 this year. He said it would conduct awareness programmes in schools highlighting the dangers of global warming. “Keep buses clean”Metropolitan Transport Corporation Managing Director M. Ramasubramanian, who inaugurated the programme, uged commuters to help in keeping the new buses clean and not to spit, scribble or drop eatables inside the buses. He also said the corporation planned to replace old buses and introduce more new routes in the near future. Exnora International Founder M.B. Nirmal said saplings had been planted at 13 terminuses so far. The project had been initiated a year ago to provide shade to commuters and staff at terminuses. Exnora Joint general secretary R. Govindaraj, North Chennai district president K. Ramadoss, and secretary Fatehraj participated in the function.
