Another survey on to settle OMC-BIOC dispute

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: A team of Geological Survey of India (GSI) has conducted a survey of iron ore mining leases in H. Siddapuram and Obulapuram villages of D. Hirehal mandal in the district on Saturday. They were learnt to have taken up survey of four mining leases given in the limits of the two villages.

According to the information reaching here, the team led by Surveyor-General S. Subba Rao first examined the mining areas of the four leases in the two villages on Friday. The team was also learnt to have inspected five spots that were identified for setting up geo-trigonometrical stations (GTS) to settle the mining lease limits in the two villages.

A State government team comprising top officials of forest, mines and geology and land survey records conducted a survey to decipher the mining limits of leases owned by Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) and Bellary Iron Ore Company (BIOC) from January 29 to February 14 this year. The survey was necessitated after a dispute between the two mining companies and alleged trespassing of BIOC limits by the OMC.

The BIOC objected to the way the survey was conducted and alleged that it was lenient towards the other company. Accordingly, the BIOC management was learnt to approached the mines department at the Central level and in turn the State government was learnt to have been told to go for another survey by GSI as requested by the BIOC. The BIOC has been demanding setting up GT stations to settle the disputes once for all.
