PUDUCHERRY: With an aim to help parents and homes understand the needs of special children, Thuligal Association for Social Service has organised a two-day medical camp from Saturday.

The camp, organised at Bharathidasan Women’s Government College, seeks to motivate parents and homes to discover the potential of special children.

“At present, parents are not training special children even for basic activities such as eating. As a result, there is no improvement in the condition of the children. We want to create awareness among parents through this camp,” Senthil Kumar, member of the association, said.

The association has invited special children from 13 schools in Puducherry for the camp. “We will assess the medical status of the children and then give suggestions for improvement. We will also see if the child requires occupational or speech therapy,” he said.

“Low awareness”

There was low awareness on the requirements of the special children as there was no proper guidance available to parents and homes, he added.

A clinical psychologist, special educator, physiotherapist, counsellor, speech therapist, occupational therapist and social worker were present in the camp to ascertain the medical status of the children.

“In case any of the children require surgeries then we will refer them to hospitals too. We also have medications available at the camp,” Mr. Kumar said.

National Service Scheme volunteers from Sarada Gangadharan College were also part of the camp.

Minister for Education M.O.H.F Shahjahan inaugurated the camp. Senior Superintendent of Police B. Srikanth spoke.
